Beating the Winter Blues

Here are a few tips to help you feel healthier and happier during the winter months.

Aromatherapy – Bergamot and Neroli have antidepressant aromas, geranium and rose are uplifting to the spirits.  You can reap the benefits of these oils through different ways – soaking in a bath of aromatherapy oil, massaging the oils into your skin using a body or massage oil or inhale the aroma with aromatherapy candles or oil burners.
Exercise – Serotonin is a hormone in your body that controls your mood.  Exercise can help raise serotonin levels in your body to help you feel your best.  Try to exercise outside in daylight as much as possible especially during the winter months.

Diet – top up your vitamin D levels with oily fish and eggs. B vitiamins are crucial to a good mood so bananas, brown rice and marmite are all great things to add to your diet.  Dark chocolate (woohoo!) and brazil nuts contain high levels of selenium and help eliminate depression.  Avoid caffeine, alcohol and high fat foods.  Stabilising your blood sugar will stop your mood dipping which is achieved by eating slow release carbohydrates and including a portion of protein with your meals.
